
How long can you actually stay in the sun? It depends on your skin type and today's UV
“Wear sunscreen when the UV index is high” is the advice everyone gives. It’s also not a real answer to the question most people actually have: how long can I be outside right now before I need to reapply or cover up? That answer depends on two things a bare UV number doesn’t capture — your skin type, and how the physics of UV exposure actually scales with intensity.
The two inputs that matter
Your Fitzpatrick skin type (Fitzpatrick TB, Arch Dermatol, 1988) is a six-point scale describing how skin typically responds to strong, unprotected sun — from Type I (“always burns, never tans”) to Type VI (“very rarely burns”). It’s a self-assessment, not a lab test, and it’s deliberately coarse: real skin varies within each type.
Today’s UV index is a linear measure of erythemal (burn-causing) UV intensity — by definition, 1 UV-index unit corresponds to 25 mW/m² of erythemally-weighted irradiance. That linearity matters: UV 8 doesn’t just feel roughly twice as strong as UV 4, it delivers burn-causing dose at almost exactly twice the rate.
Worked example: UV 8, four skin types
Photobiology reference tables give each Fitzpatrick type a Minimal Erythema Dose (MED) — the dose that produces the first perceptible sunburn — measured in Standard Erythema Doses (SED). Combine that with the UV-index-to-dose-rate relationship above and you get real, if approximate, numbers. At UV index 8 (a typical clear summer midday reading):

The same table exists for every other index value, computed the same way — there’s a page per level at how long it takes to burn, UV 3 to 11, including UV 8 itself, each with the conditions that actually produce that reading.
The “sensible time to cover up” column isn’t the burn threshold itself — it’s a conservative margin below it (roughly 60% of the way to MED), because MED reference values vary by an honest ±30–50% within a single phototype and self-rated skin type is imprecise. Treat any number here as a starting point, not a stopwatch — and none of this is medical advice; it’s a computed estimate from published physics and standard reference tables, not a diagnosis of your actual skin.
Why the same table looks different tomorrow
Because the relationship is linear in UV index, the whole table roughly scales with it. Drop to UV 6 (overcast, or an hour later in the afternoon) and a Type II’s window stretches to roughly 17 minutes; climb to UV 11 (equatorial midday) and it drops well under 10. A single “wear sunscreen” reminder can’t carry that — it needs today’s actual number, not yesterday’s habit.
One caveat worth reading before you treat any of these numbers as a permission slip: the WHO’s own Global Solar UV Index: A Practical Guide states that “reporting burn times is not recommended,” because people read a burn time as a safe level of unprotected exposure. The per-level pages set that objection out in full alongside the numbers, which is the honest way to publish them.
